Matt Cutts explains how new search algorithms are evaluated at Google

Matt Cutts has told many a times, “how do search algorithms work?” through his videos and blogs. This time he has discussed how Google evaluates a new search algorithm. Read further what he says about it.

Here is the question

What are some of the metrics that Google uses to evaluate whether one iteration of the ranking algorithm is delivering better quality results to users than another?

What Matt Cutt has replied in his video?

Matt tells that the adopt, adapt & throw away decisions of a new algorithm are taken after:

  • A new algorithm is tested offline to see how results appear.
  • The quality is checked on the basis of previous rating like testing whether the current URLs are of higher quality than the previous ones. Google has many search quality raters and a database of previous cases on the basis of which inferences are made when Google requests.
  • Google decides further based on few metrics whether a test moves to next level or not.
  • Live tests take place afterwards in which Google samples a subgroup of real searchers and offers them new results. Higher number of clicks on new results suggests high quality as compared to old results.
  • The final word on making an algorithm live is of Google Search Quality Launch Committee.
